Background
Cole was nineteen the first time he heard a gun go empty in a fight. He was a SAW gunner with the Rangers in a valley in eastern Afghanistan whose name he never learned, and the box he reached for wasn’t there.
He made sergeant, then went to Officer Candidate School. Asked why, he gave the same short answer every time: he wanted to be the one doing the math.
That math rules his platoon. Every rifleman in Stalker carries three hundred spare rounds on top of his basic load, and every SAW carries a thousand. Cole’s own ruck weighs the same as his men’s. They curse him for it on every ramp. He lets them.
In the field
Quiet on the net, deliberate in a fight, and always two moves ahead. Cole decides fast and explains later, if at all. He trusts his sergeants, listens to his specialists, and keeps the weight of every call to himself.
